ON THE MAPS: A deep, 1000 mb surface low is creeping into West Alabama this morning, with scattered to numerous tropical showers and storms over our state. While the instability is very limited, there is a high degree of low level helicity (0-1 km) ahead of the low, meaning we will the potential for a few low-topped, spin-up tornadoes today.

The greatest risk of these will be along and east of I-65, with the risk moving entirely into Georgia by midday. The risk of severe weather for West Alabama has all but ended this morning.

The NWS in Birmingham issued a tornado warning for parts of Elmore and Coosa Counties early this morning, but there are no warnings up for the northern half of the state as I write this.

Just be aware that a tornado warning or two is possible this morning over East Alabama. No, these aren’t like the strong/violent tornadoes we can have in spring or late fall, but an EF-0 coming down your street is dangerous and life threatening, and you have to pay attention.

TONIGHT/TOMORROW: The surface low will drift to the north, and clouds will likely hang around, with some risk of a stray shower in spots. And, the weather will be cooler tomorrow with most places having a very hard time getting out of the 60s.

LATTER HALF OF THE WEEK: Our weather should be dry Wednesday through Friday, with partly to mostly sunny days, fair nights, and a slow warming trend. We reach the mid 70s Wednesday, 80 degrees Thursday, and low 80s Friday.

WEEKEND PEEK: A cold front will very slowly move through the state over the weekend, and we will mention just the risk of a few widely scattered showers Saturday and Sunday. Not much moisture, and certainly no big rain event. Temperatures will trend downward, with a high in the upper 70s Saturday, and low 70s Sunday. Some North Alabama communities probably won’t get out of the 60s Sunday with a cool north breeze. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details and the graphics.
