COOLER AIR GETS CLOSER: The leading edge of the coolest air so far this season is from near Cleveland to Tulsa to Dallas this morning. Around here we expect another pleasant day with ample sunshine and a high in the low 80s.

OUR WEEKEND: The front is expected to pass through this part of Alabama tomorrow evening. We will mention a chance of scattered showers along the front, generally in the 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. time frame. Moisture will be limited, and so the rain won’t be heavy, but a few places could very well get wet. The sky should become mostly cloudy during the day, with a high in the mid 70s.

Cool air flows into the state Sunday. It now looks like we will have low clouds to start the day as the cold air advection process begins, and the NAM and other mesoscale models are even hinting at the chance of a little light rain or drizzle, and we will amend the forecast to include this possibility. We will be optimistic and indicate clearing by afternoon, but if the clouds stick around all day we won’t get out of the 50s. Factor in a stiff north breeze and it will be a chilly day for October.

NEXT WEEK: The sky should go totally clear by Sunday night, and we still project a low in the 37-44 degree range by early Monday morning. The weather looks great through Wednesday with sunny pleasant days and clear cool nights.

The 00Z GFS hints that a surface front will enter North Alabama and become nearly stationary Wednesday night, and this could set up a chance of showers Thursday and Friday; first time we have seen this look so confidence in the forecast toward the end of next week is not very high. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Great weather for the high school games tonight. The sky will be mostly clear, with temperatures falling from the 70s at kickoff into the 60s by the second half.

Tomorrow Auburn will host the Arkansas Razorbacks at Jordan-Hare Stadium; the kickoff comes a little after 11:00 a.m. The sky will become mostly cloudy during the game, and we will mention just a slight chance of a shower by the fourth quarter. A pretty decent chance the entire game will be dry despite the clouds; the kickoff temperature will be near 73 degrees, rising to near 75 by the final whistle.

UAB will host Southeast Louisiana at Legion Field (2:00 kickoff). The sky will be mostly cloudy, and a brief passing shower is possible during the game. Temperatures will be in the mid 70s at kickoff, falling into the 60s by the fourth quarter. Identical weather conditions can be expected for Samford’s home game tomorrow against The Citadel.

RACE WEEKEND: For tomorrow’s Fred’s 250 at the Talladega Superspeedway, the sky will be mostly cloudy, and a passing shower is possible during the race. The chance of a shower at the track is in the 20-30 percent category, so rain won’t be a big issue, but just keep in mind a few raindrops are not out of the question. Temperatures will be in the 70s.

On Sunday, the day will begin cloudy and cool at Talladega with a chance of some light rain or drizzle during the morning. That should be over by the time the Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500 begins. We expect gradual clearing during the race with a cool breeze and temperatures peaking around 60 degrees. Many will need a light jacket.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Oscar in the Atlantic is not doing well; the system should dissipate today far from land, and the rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.
