The well advertised chill down is beginning to arrive since it looks like this one will come into our area in pieces. The first piece is a cold front which had reached the Birmingham and Tuscaloosa areas with a well defined wind shift. But it was interesting to note that scattered showers with a few embedded thunderstorms were occurring behind the wind shift. Those showers and thundershowers were occurring along the line where the dew points were dropping off into the 40s.
Looking aloft, the overall pattern is a trough over the eastern half of the country with a strong short wave positioned this morning over the Dakotas. It is this short wave that should provide the final push to move the cold front through our area later today and early Sunday ushering the cold air into the region. Look for lows in the 40s Sunday and Monday mornings but after that we begin a gradual warm up with highs only in the 60s Sunday and Monday warming to near 80 by the end of the week.
Our weather pattern continues to be dominated by the long wave trough over the eastern US for much of the upcoming week as small disturbances move through the westerly flow. These disturbances stay well north of us so other than some passing clouds we should not see any significant weather remaining dry with the gradual warming trend.
The surface high slides off the Mid-Atlantic coast on Saturday, so we will need to watch for the potential for a wedge pattern to set up which could squash the warming trend. That’s a little far out to be too specific, but the GFS sure hints at the potential for a wedge.
Looking further out, the pattern flattens somewhat for us so no signs of anything extreme.
Nadine is finally gone and the tropics are quiet with no active disturbances under surveillance (gads, I need to stop watching so many crime shows!). And nothing is expected to be severe with the current front moving through the eastern half of the country.

I had a wonderful time Wednesday at Railroad Park with a good friend who was using his photography training to help me improve my photography skills. We had a great time walking around the park shooting items that probably don’t attract much attention and then talking about the good and bad points of the shots we got. I expect to have the next Weather Xtreme Video posted by 8 am or so on Sunday morning. Make it a great day and Godspeed.
