Not the Typical Frontal Passage

Much cooler air began invading Alabama yesterday with the passage of a cold front which had reached the northern Gulf and will soon exit the southeast US coast. But unlike many of the cold fronts which move through the Southeast US, this one will not be accompanied by clearing sky. In fact, it appears likely that low level moisture and clouds will remain in place until Monday afternoon. All of this is courtesy of a broad trough over the eastern half of the US. A strong short wave will rotate through the flow today and tonight allowing for some patchy sprinkles until the clearing finally occurs Monday afternoon or early evening. Any precipitation that occurs today, tonight, or Monday will be very light, probably only a few hundredths of an inch at most.

After that a surface high pressure system will settle into the Southeast US and allow for a warming trend through the upcoming week. By Wednesday we will see highs near 80. A fast moving wave along with a surface front should drop temperatures on Thursday but the approach of a ridge from the west will provide a quick warm up with temperatures next weekend again getting up to around 80 degrees.

No severe weather potential across the US today or the next couple of days, and the tropics are quiet with only one disturbed area of weather in the vicinity of the Bahamas. Development of this area does not appear likely anytime soon.

Long range GFS modeling suggests no real extremes for us to deal with. However, a cut-off low over the Central Gulf Coast region could bring some unsettled weather to the Southeast US from October 19th to 22nd.
