An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

RADAR CHECK: Moderate rain is falling over Northwest Alabama this morning… heaviest rain is over parts of Marion, Franklin, and Colbert Counties. And, it is a cold rain with temperatures in the 40s. Patches of light rain are seen from near Fayette to Smith Lake to Scottsboro. This rain is being forced by a strong upper trough moving through the region, and we will maintain the risk of light rain or drizzle this morning with a thick low cloud deck firmly in place. We might see a few peeks of sunshine this afternoon, mainly over Northwest Alabama, as the trough axis moves on to the east.

Temperatures won’t rise much; I doubt if we can get out of the 50s today along and north of I-20, with highs in the 60s south of Birmingham. Not even close to the average high of 78 for October 8.

TONIGHT: As the sky clears, it should be the coldest night so far this season. Most places will drop into the 40-44 degree range, but the colder valleys will easily reach the 30s. Just maybe a touch of frost for the colder valleys for the first time this fall.

REST OF THE WEEK: The weather will be brighter and warmer. Tomorrow’s high will near 70, followed by mid 70s Wednesday, upper 70s Thursday, and a high around 80 Friday. Each day should feature a good supply of sunshine as dry air takes over.

THE WEEKEND: For now it looks mostly dry and warm. The high should be at or just over 80 degrees Saturday and Sunday with a pretty good deal of sunshine both days. A weak front could touch off a few showers Sunday evening, but for now the risk looks small.

TROPICS: No named systems across the Atlantic basin for now, and we see just a few small, disorganized features. Tropical storm development is not expected through mid-week.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will have a very interesting show tonight… Bryan Norcross of The Weather Channel will join us as he talked about their new effort to give winter storms names. Also, legendary TV meteorologist Bob Ryan of our sister station, WJLA-TV in Washington, will join us as well. As always, you can watch live here… the pre-show begins at 8:15, the show itself starts at 8:30.
