Looks like hump day will be somewhat cloudy especially during the morning with some mix of sun and clouds for the afternoon. Temperatures remain mild with highs today in the mid 70s.

The long wave trough over the eastern US will take a break as it weakens in response to a strong closed low that will come out of the Southwest US. That closed low should move northeastward into the Great Lakes by Sunday when we see some moisture return. A fairly weak cold front will approach Alabama on Sunday evening and move through the area on Monday. This will bring us a chance for showers mainly Monday.

The long wave trough re-establishes itself on Tuesday over the eastern half of the country. But it is not quite as deep with a fetch coming out of the Northwest US. That should mean we will cool down a tad but nothing extreme. A strong short wave will move out of Canada on Wednesday deepening over the eastern part of the US. A strong surface low associated with and just ahead of that trough will drag a cold front toward us on the 18th with what appears to be a really good shot at some rain. And this one, while on the edge of voodoo country, could be significantly colder.

After that system passes, the overall pattern out into voodoo country appears to be somewhat zonal with an absence of extremes for us.

Tropics are still quiet with just one disturbed area of weather east-southeast of the Leeward Islands. The area of disturbed weather has increased a bit since yesterday, however, conditions still do not appear favorable for formation of a tropical storm for the next couple of days. Future movement of this area is likely to take it into the eastern Caribbean during the next five days where conditions are a bit more favorable for some development.

The closed low coming out of the Southwest US is likely to produce a risk for severe weather on Day 3 and Day 4, that’s Friday and Saturday, in the Central Plains. As you might imagine, there are uncertainties in the models that far out, but it does appear now that damaging wind and tornadoes will be possible with that system.
