RADAR CHECK: Despite limited moisture, a strong impulse rotating through the base of the deep upper trough over the eastern third of the nation has managed to squeeze out a few showers over the eastern half of the state this afternoon. Due to very cold air aloft (500 mb temps at -20 C), there have been a number of reports of small hail and graupel (soft hail) with these showers. Birmingham reports 55 degrees at 3:00, but to the north Decatur reports only 45 degrees with a north wind gusting to 25 mph. A very raw day there.

These showers will end soon, and the sky will clear this evening as drier air continues to work into the state. Most places will be in the mid to upper 30s by daybreak tomorrow.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: Expect sunshine in full supply both days. Friday morning will be cold with a low in the 30s, but we see a high near 60 tomorrow, followed by upper 60s Friday.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Still looks dry and mild, with afternoon highs in the 70 to 73 degree range Saturday and Sunday along with a good supply of sunshine both days. Winds will begin to increase Sunday as the pressure gradient tightens up across the state ahead of a major storm system pushing out of the Great Plains. This has the potential to bring some severe weather to parts of the nation’s heartland over the weekend.

STORMY MONDAY: The 12Z GFS is a little more robust with the storm event late Monday and Monday night. Still looks like a squall line with potential for strong, maybe damaging wind in spots. Still too early to be specific, but based on the latest data it looks like the main window for storms will come from about 3:00 p.m. Monday through 3:00 a.m. Tuesday. Then, colder and drier air blows in here Tuesday. See the Weather Xtreme video for all of the details and graphics.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Looks great. Clear and cool for the high school playoff games tomorrow and Friday nights… temperatures will fall through the 50s.

For Saturday’s Alabama/Texas A&M game at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, the sky will be mostly sunny with a temperature near 72 degrees at kickoff, falling into the 60s during the second half. Auburn will host Georgia Saturday evening at 6:00 at Jordan-Hare Stadium; the sky will be clear with a kickoff temperature near 66 degrees, falling into the 50 during the second half.

STORM ALERT XTREME IS SATURDAY: Our annual storm spotter training is coming up this Saturday at the BJCC, as part of the Alabama International Auto show. We begin at 9:00, and you will be done at 2:00. And, as a “thank you”, you will get free admission into the car show. There is no cost, and no need to register, just show up. Brian Peters will be the trainer, and we ask all existing and potential Skywatchers to attend. We are excited that Kevin Laws of the NWS Birmingham will be conducting a session on using dual-pol radar. See you there!
