Clouds Hang Around

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

While today should be generally dry across the northern half of the state, moisture will be trapped in the low levels of the atmosphere, and the lingering clouds will linger for much of the day. We should begin to see some clearing this afternoon, but some communities could remain cloudy. Where the clouds hang tough, we might have a hard time getting out of the 60s. Any showers this afternoon should be confined to areas south of Montgomery.

THE WEEKEND: The sky will clear tonight, and tomorrow looks like a beautiful day, with ample sunshine and a high in the mid to upper 70s. On Sunday, a disturbance riding down the back side of the upper trough over the eastern U.S. will bring scattered clouds, and the cold air aloft associated with the impulse will make the air somewhat unstable, and a shower might pop up in a few spots on radar. But, the lower levels will be very dry, and the rain should be very spotty. But, we will probably need to insert some risk of a shower Sunday afternoon on our next forecast update. No big deal, but just be aware that a few raindrops are not totally out of the question.

NEXT WEEK: Not much confidence in the solution next week with little run to run consistency in model output. Monday looks dry, but another impulse could bring a shower Tuesday afternoon or Tuesday night. Like Sunday, it doesn’t look like a big deal, and the rain, if any, will be light and spotty.

Deeper moisture will move into Alabama late in the week, and we will have a tug of war going on between a summer-like upper high building over Florida, and a wave in the mid-latitude westerlies to the north. It looks like we will be in a very warm and muggy airmass by Friday and the Memorial Day weekend with at least a chance of showers and storms, but no total wash-out with the best dynamics remaining well to the north.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.

I will be speaking at the 5th grade graduation today at Greystone Elementary School… then I am headed out to the Regions Charity Golf Classic at Ross Bridge, where I will be doing the weather live at 5:00 and 6:00. This means I probably won’t be able to produce an afternoon Weather Xtreme video, but I will write another weekend discussion before 3:30. Enjoy the day!
