Much Cooler Today; Some Frost Possible Early Tomorrow

RAIN MOVES OUT; COLDER AIR MOVES IN: We are very thankful that there were no big severe weather issues early this morning as a cold front passed through the region. A tree or two was blown down by strong gradient winds ahead of the storms, but generally speaking it was a quiet morning, and we can be very thankful for that. The air was pretty stable, which kept us out of real trouble.

Rain will move out of the state this morning; it should entirely in Georgia by mid-morning. Clouds will linger, and it sure looks like we won’t get out of the 50s today with a chilly northwest wind of 10-20 mph, making it a raw, cold day in April.

FROST TOMORROW MORNING? The sky will clear this evening, and as the wind dies down the stage is set for a classic “blackberry winter” kind of night in Alabama. Temperatures will drop into the 33-38 degree range early tomorrow, and some patchy, light frost is possible over North/Central Alabama. And, some of the normally colder pockets might even make a run at the freezing mark… places like Valley Head and Black Creek. I don’t think the frost will be especially widespread or damaging, but growers need to be aware of the threat. We rarely get this cold in late April.

OUR WEEKEND: Sunshine in full supply tomorrow and Sunday; we reach the upper 60s tomorrow, and the high Sunday will be close to 70 degrees. We should note Sunday morning will be very cool with a low in the low 40s; upper 30s are possible for colder spots.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS hints the next chance of showers and storms will come late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning; the severe weather threat at this point looks pretty marginal. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
