Some Rain By The Weekend

COLD AGAIN TONIGHT: We project a low in the lower 40s for most North/Central Alabama communities early tomorrow, but some of the colder pockets should see lows down in the mid to upper 30s, much like this morning. The sky will stay clear, and the wind light.
Tomorrow will be another delightful spring day, with a sunny sky and a high in the mid to upper 70s. But, clouds will return tomorrow night as moist air surges northward into our state.
WEEKEND SHOWERS: Not much change in the overall thinking for the weekend; we will have to dodge raindrops at times Saturday and Sunday, but not a wash-out.
The 12Z GFS, and the higher resolution 4 km NAM support the idea of a warm front moving northward through Alabama during the day Saturday. A rain mass north of the warm front should impact places like Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston, and Gadsden in the 4:00-10:00 a.m. time frame… then the rain moves north toward the Tennessee Valley by midday with a break in the rain for rest of Alabama. A few scattered showers could re-form later Saturday afternoon as the air becomes a little unstable. The sun might pop out a bit Saturday afternoon after the morning rain, and we project a high between 76 and 80 degrees.
Then, on Sunday, a cold front will approach, keeping a chance of showers and storms in the forecast. Again, it won’t rain all day, but a few showers and a thunderstorm or two are likely. The high Sunday afternoon should be in the mid to upper 70s.
NEXT WEEK: The weather Monday is up for debate. The 12Z GFS shows the surface front stalling around I-59… with drier air over Northwest Alabama, but a continued risk of showers from I-59 south. We will lean in that direction with the forecast… then the front dissipates, and on Tuesday and Wednesday our weather will be warm and humid with just a few widely scattered showers with little in the day of dynamic support. The high will be pretty close to 80 degrees Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. We might see low 80s on one of those days if we see a decent amount of sun.
Then, a cold front will bring an increase in the number of showers and thunderstorms Thursday and Thursday night; too early to determine if severe weather will be an issue, but at the moment the threat looks rather low.
A shot of unusually cool air blows into Alabama late in the week, and we might flirt with some record lows at some point that following weekend (May 4-5). That weekend should be cool and dry with a good supply of sunshine both days. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details, along with all of the maps and graphics.
