A Handful Of Scattered Showers

RADAR CHECK: Again today we have a few scattered showers on radar this afternoon; most of them are south of a line from York to Linden to Greenville at mid-afternoon… we also note a few sprinkles over the northwest counties of the state. These showers will fizzle out once the sun goes down later this evening; temperatures are generally in the mid 80s with a mix of sun and clouds.
MORE GREAT PLAINS SEVERE WEATHER: Tornado watches cover the U.S. from Oklahoma to Wisconsin this afternoon; we have tornado warnings up now for parts of East Oklahoma and Arkansas. A slow moving, large scale negative tilt upper trough moving out of the Rockies is providing large scale ascent across this region. Organized severe weather is not expected in Alabama for the foreseeable future.
TOMORROW/SATURDAY: Not much change in our weather. Partly sunny, warm days with the risk of a few scattered showers and storms, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours. Highs in the mid 80s.
SUNDAY: We expect a general increase in the number of showers and storms as a cold front approaches the state. But, it won’t rain all day, and the sun should break out at times. The high will be in the 82-85 degree range.
NEXT WEEK: The 12Z GFS continues the trend of drier air moving into Alabama late Sunday night and early Monday, and we will adjust the forecast to reflect drier conditions. It looks like we can forecast mostly sunny days Monday through Wednesday with little if any chance of rain, along with lower humidity levels and slightly cooler nights. We have a chance of reaching the 50s early Tuesday morning if drier air does indeed move into our part of the state.
TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Depression Barbara, once a minimal hurricane in the East Pacific, is hugging the Gulf Coast of Mexico down in the Bay of Campeche. The circulation is expected to drift westward, back over land, so no additional development is expected for now.
The GFS does continue to suggest some kind of tropical low moving up toward the Florida Panhandle around June 8; if this happens to be correct some heavy rain is possible for the Florida Peninsula… Alabama would be on the dry side. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.
AT THE BEACH: We project about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day for the Gulf Coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores, with the risk of a few scattered showers or thunderstorms each day (pretty much a daily routine there in summer). Highs will be in the 80s, and the sea water temperature this afternoon at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 78 degrees.
