A Few Afternoon Showers Possible

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

WARM, HUMID WEATHER CONTINUES: Not much change in the overall weather pattern for Alabama today and tomorrow. Partly sunny, warm, humid days with the risk of scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. The chance of any one spot getting wet today is about one in four, and one in three tomorrow, and most of the showers will form in the 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. time frame. Highs will remain mostly in the mid 80s.

TO THE WEST: Yet another “moderate risk” of severe weather for parts of Oklahoma today, but this will be their last severe weather day for a while. A “slight risk” extends from near Childress, Texas to Chicago as the active convective pattern across the nation’s mid-section continues.

We do note SPC has put extreme North Alabama in a “slight risk” tomorrow night; storms moving out of the Mid-South could move into Alabama tomorrow night with gusty winds and maybe some hail, but it is only a marginal threat.

SUNDAY: We will forecast a good chance of showers and thunderstorms as a cold front gets closer to Alabama. It won’t rain all day, and you might see a little sun at times, but no doubt we will get occasionally wet. Rain amounts should be in the 1/2 inch range, and the high will drop into the low to mid 80s.

NEXT WEEK: Drier air will move into the state Monday; most of the state will be dry with just a few lingering showers over the southern half of the state. For now the weather looks dry with a good supply of sunshine on Tuesday and Wednesday. Highs hold in the 80s, but humidity levels will be lower, and nights a little cooler. Some of the normally cooler pockets could see a low in the 50s early Tuesday morning.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Expect about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day through Monday from Panama City west to Gulf Shores. Each day there is a risk of scattered showers and storms, and highs will be in the 80s. We note there is high risk of rip currents in this zone today, so watch for the red flags and stay out of the ocean when advised. The sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 78 degrees.

TROPICS: Looks like the remnants of East Pacific Hurricane Barbara, now on the Gulf Coast of Mexico in the far southern Bay of Campeche, will drift westward back over land, so re-development is not likely. However, the 00Z GFS develops a tropical storm over the eastern Gulf of Mexico at the end of next week (one week from today)… this moves into the Cedar Key area on Saturday June 8 with potential for heavy rain for the Florida Peninsula (Daytona, Orland, Tampa, Fort Myers, Miami, etc). If this happens to be correct, Alabama would be on the dry side of the circulation and there could be no real impact here. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
