RADAR PEEK: The most widespread rain over Alabama this afternoon is over the southern counties of the state, but showers and storms are developing over parts of West and North Alabama as I write this. Strong storms were scattered over parts of Walker, Tuscaloosa, Pickens, Greene, and Hale Counties… moving southeast. Like recent days, the heavier storms are producing heavy rain and lots of lightning. Temperatures around here are generally in the 80s.

Storms will end tonight as drier air moves into the state from the north.

MOSTLY DRY TOMORROW AND THURSDAY: The chance of any one spot getting wet tomorrow and Friday is only 10 percent thanks to the dry air; expect a good supply of sunshine both days with a high between 87 and 90 degrees.

OUR WEEKEND: An approaching surface front will bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Then, on Sunday, another surge of drier air moves down into North Alabama. The best chance of showers and storms Sunday will be south of I-20, over the southern two-thirds of the state. For Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Gadsden, and points north, the day looks mostly rain-free with slightly lower humidity levels. Expect a high in the mid to upper 80s both days.

NEXT WEEK: The weather looks mostly rain-free for the northern half of Alabama Monday and Tuesday with a good supply of sunshine both days; nights will be a little cooler with lows well down in the 60s. I fully expect a few of the cooler pockets to reach the upper 50s, giving us a nice preview of fall.

DORIAN FORMS: Tropical Storm Dorian is in the far eastern Atlantic with top winds of 50 mph. It will move west/northwest over the next five days, and should be just north of Puerto Rico by Sunday night. Dry air and shear should keep the system below hurricane strength through the weekend. Beyond that, most of the ensemble members turn Dorian north, and then northeast over the open Atlantic before getting close to the U.S. But, we note the 12Z GFS recurves Dorian just off the U.S. coast. One way or another this should not be a Gulf of Mexico system. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Expect about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day through the weekend with a few scattered showers and storms around on a daily basis. Highs will be in the upper 80s on the immediate coast, with low 90s just a few miles inland. Sea water temperatures are in the low to mid 80s.
