Warm and Dry Today & Saturday

This edition of the Weather Xtreme Video starts out with a look at our wet July. But today is not expected to be wet. A weak boundary seen mainly in the dew points lies across South Alabama where I expect to see scattered showers during the afternoon. There is a little fog around this morning in spots, but that should burn off quickly by 9 am or so. With plenty of sun today and Saturday, we should see our highs climb into the range of 89 to 92 each day.
Interesting to note that the tropics are still quiet, but the remains of what was Dorian has flared up some over the Bahamas just off the Southeast Coast of Florida. NHC gives it a moderate chance of developing before it gets into an area where upper level winds are expected to be hostile to any additional development. This cloud mass and disturbed area reminds me of the Energizer Bunny!
The moisture axis to the south should move northward on Saturday and Sunday. I think we stay mostly dry Saturday but we could see isolated showers south of the Birmingham area. Showers will become more widespread as we get into Sunday and Monday as another weak front approaches Alabama from the north. That weak boundary will long just get into Alabama as the upper air pattern goes more zonal into Tuesday and Wednesday. Until the pattern goes zonal, the northwesterly flow will need to be watched for those large thunderstorm clusters called mesoscale convective systems which could put a big crimp in the forecasts. One of those was going on this morning in the Central Plains states and the GFS continues to hint at this possibility. The big problem is forecasting the timing of one of these. With a nearly zonal pattern into the latter part of next week, the threat for these clusters becomes lessened.
Looks like the temperatures will remain warm but no signs of any big heat. Clouds and showers will help keep temperatures in check, so look for highs ranging from the upper 80s to lower 90s from Sunday well into next week.
Beach goers should see a good supply of sunshine on the Alabama Gulf Coast with highs around 90 degrees and the threat of a passing shower or two.
SPC maintains the standard slight risk of severe thunderstorms in the Central Plains states into Day 1 and 2.
Looking ahead into week 2, the GFS maintains another eastern US trough, so we continue in the pattern we’ve seen much of the summer. This pattern will keep us relatively wet with highs close to or just below where we typically see temperatures for August.
