| August 30, 2013 @ 3:15 pm

**No afternoon Weather Xtreme video today**

SUN, HEAT, STORMS: Strong storms have formed in scattered pockets over East Alabama this afternoon; at one point a severe thunderstorm warning was required for parts of Etowah and St. Clair Counties. Here is radar check shortly after 3:00…

Storms are moving to the south, and the heavier ones are producing torrential rain, lots of lightning, and gusty winds in the 35-40 mph range. The storms will settle down once the sun goes down later this evening.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND: No real change tomorrow through Monday… hot, humid weather continues with a mix of sun and clouds each day and the risk of scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Highs will be mostly in the low 90s.

NEXT WEEK: Models continue to advertise a nice surge of cool, dry air moving into the state by the middle of next week…

The dry air begins moving into Alabama Tuesday, but all of the state enjoy lower humidity and cooler nights by Wednesday and Thursday.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL WEATHER: Storms will linger through about 8:30 p.m., mainly over the eastern half of the state. The chance of any one stadium seeing a shower over East Alabama during the first half of tonight’s games is about 30 percent… only a 10 percent risk of a shower over West Alabama. Kickoff temperatures will be in the upper 80s away from the showers, falling into the upper 70s by the final whistle.

COLLEGE GAMES TOMORROW: Auburn will host Washington State tomorrow evening (6:00 p.m. kickoff) at Jordan-Hare Stadium; a brief shower or storm is possible during the first half… chance of a shower at the stadium is 30 percent. Otherwise, mostly fair with a kickoff temperature near 88 degrees, then dropping through the 80s during the game. The weather down at Troy will be almost identical for the UAB/Troy game; the kickoff temperature down in Pike County will be close to 90. Alabama won’t have to worry about weather since they play Virginia Tech in the Georgia Dome, but for fans headed over for the game, tomorrow in Atlanta will feature a mix of sun and clouds with a high around 90 degrees, and a few pop-up afternoon showers or storms are possible.

TROPICS: NHC still suggests the wave coming off the African coast will have a good chance of becoming a tropical storm, but it expected to gain in latitude, and should recurve into the open Atlantic and most likely won’t be a threat to land. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: About 7 to 9 hour of sunshine each day through Monday with scattered showers and storms possible each day. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, with low 90s inland. The sea water temperature this afternoon at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 85 degrees.
