OCTOBER SKY: Love the sky over Alabama this afternoon; high cirrus streaks/ice crystals are at about 25,000 feet, with scattered lower clouds. The lowest part of the atmosphere is very dry, and there is no rain on radar. Temperatures are below average, with readings mostly in the 60s.

TONIGHT/TOMORROW: Clouds will increase across the state tonight ahead of a long wave upper trough over central part of North America. Interesting to note that snow flakes are now falling at Wichita, KS under the trough. No snow for Alabama, and no rain for the northern half of the state despite the clouds. Some light rain is possible near the Gulf Coast, and north of here showers are possible from about Nashville on north, but we will remain dry. Tomorrow will feature a mix of sun and clouds with a high between 72 and 75 degrees.

A new surge of cold air arrives tomorrow night, and it looks like we can expect a low early Sunday between 40 and 45 degrees; some of the colder pockets over North Alabama might even reach the 30s. The day Sunday will be sun filled with a high in the upper 60s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Tonight looks great for high school football with clear and cool conditions. The kickoff temperature will be in the low 60s, falling into the 50s during the second half. You will need a jacket.

Alabama will host the Arkansas Razorbacks tomorrow evening (6:00p CT kickoff) at Bryant-Denny Stadium; the sky will be mostly fair; about 73 degrees at kickoff, with temperatures falling into the 50s by the final whistle.

Auburn is on the road; they will take on the Texas A&M Aggies in College Station, TX tomorrow (2:30p CT kickoff). The sky will be partly sunny with only a very small risk of a shower during the game; about 74 degrees at kickoff, then falling into the 60s by the fourth quarter.

RACE WEEKEND AT TALLADEGA: We expect dry weather through Sunday with pleasant days, and fair chilly nights. Highs for the weekend will be in the low to mid 70s, and a chilly Sunday morning low in the mid 40s. The sky will become cloudy at times tonight and tomorrow as rain moves across South Alabama, but that wet weather should stay south of the Superspeedway; Sunday should be a sun filled day. A fine weekend for NASCAR fans.

AT THE BEACH: Today should be brighter from Panama City to Gulf Shores with intervals of sunshine, but some light rain could move back into the region tonight and tomorrow. Then, Sunday looks much better with a good supply of sunshine. Highs will be generally in the 70s.

FROST THREAT NEXT WEEK: No rain for North/Central Alabama next week… the weather highlight is the potential for an early season frost at daybreak Thursday; looks like lows will be in the 35 to 40 degree range, with potential for low 30s across the colder valleys and protected areas. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details, and all the maps.
