OUT OF THE DEEP FREEZE: Temperatures have reached the low 40s across much of North/Central Alabama this afternoon… as you can see from the post below this one, we wrapped up 60 consecutive hours below freezing late this morning around 11:00.

Tonight will not be as cold as recent nights; we will be in the mid to upper 30s early tomorrow, and we reach the low 50s tomorrow with a mix of sun and clouds.

TO THE WEST: A disturbance will bring the risk of sleet and freezing rain to much of Arkansas, Missouri, and West Tennessee tonight and tomorrow… some icing is even possible down into the Mississippi Delta region, where the NWS Jackson has issued a freezing rain advisory. If you are traveling to places like Memphis or Little Rock tonight or tomorrow morning, be aware of the potential for some icy travel.

FRIDAY: The day will be mostly cloudy, and I can’t rule out a shower in a spot or two during the day, but most places will stay dry. The high will be close to 60, and south winds will pick up during the afternoon ahead of a storm system to the west.

WEEKEND BEGINS WET: We are still looking at a good rain event for Alabama from about 12:00 midnight Friday night through 12:00 noon Saturday. While there is very good upper support, there isn’t much instability or shear, so we won’t expect severe weather problems, but some thunder is certainly possible. Rain amounts of around one inch are likely, with isolated amounts to 1.5 inch.

Drier airs blows into the state Saturday afternoon; temperatures will probably hover in the 50s all day. Then, we will forecast clearing Saturday night as the dry air takes over.

Sunday should be a sun filled day; we start the day in the 30s… the high Sunday afternoon will be in the mid to upper 50s. Clearly the nicest day over the weekend.

NEXT WEEK: The weather looks generally dry through the week. Seasonal temperatures will continue Monday and Tuesday, but the GFS continues to advertise another cold shot by Wednesday and Thursday. Some North Alabama communities could go back into the teens at daybreak Thursday.

LONG RANGE: Yet another cold shot shows up around January 19, and then the last week of the month looks relatively comfortable. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.
