Watching the Wintry Weather

| February 8, 2014 @ 2:17 am

A wintry mix continues moving northeastward tonight across eastern Mississippi and northwestern Alabama.

Snow was accumulating on raised surface in and around Winfield and Hamilton in Marion County.

It was 28F at Haleyville with a wintry mix. Some of the heaviest precipitation was there a short while ago, and it is now approaching Moulton in Lawrence County.

Precip in the Golden Triangle area of eastern Mississippi will move into Marion, Lamar, Fayette and northern Pickens Counties in the next 30-45 minutes. This activity will brush northern Tuscaloosa County.

In the I-59 corridor, it was 34F at Birmingham and 37F at Tuscaloosa. Both should stay just above freezing and the heaviest precipitation should stay to the north of I-59, so this corridor will be spared any real problems. Just a few patchy slick spots on bridges and overpasses.

But over Fayette, Lamar, Marion, Walker and Winston Counties, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through noon. Light snow and ice accumulations could cause travel problems, especially on bridges and overpasses through mid-morning.

Overall, the precipitation appears to be weakening slowly on radar as the precipitation battles drier air to the east.

By 9 a.m., almost all of this will be in Georgia and skies will be clearing, heading for a high in the 50s.

We will be monitoring things through the overnight.

Next update 4:30 a.m. unless conditions warrant an early message.
