COLD START: Some North Alabama communities are below freeing this morning… some temperatures at daybreak…

Cullman 32

Today will be cool and dry with a partly to mostly sunny sky; the high will be at or just over 60 degrees… keep in mind our average high for March 24 is 69.

EVEN COLDER TOMORROW: Strong north winds will develop across Alabama tomorrow in response to a strong high northwest of the state, and a rapidly deepening surface low off the Atlantic coast. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny, but windy and cold with north winds of 15-25 mph, and a high only in the mid 50s.

WEDNESDAY MORNING FREEZE: Winds will calm down tomorrow night, and freezing temperatures are expected over North and Central Alabama early Wednesday morning. Most communities will see a low between 25 and 29 degrees, but the colder valleys over North Alabama could easily see low 20s. A freeze warning will be needed (the NWS issues these once spring begins to alert growers).

Wednesday will be cool and dry with a sunny sky and a high in the mid to upper 50s.

RAIN LATE IN THE WEEK: A warming trend begins Thursday as we rise into the mid to upper 60s and winds veer around to the south. Then, a band of showers and thunderstorms will move into Alabama late Thursday night and Friday morning ahead of a surface cold front. The 00Z GFS suggests the main window for storms will come from about 2:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Friday.

The primary surface low will be way up in Ontario, and with hardly any surface based instability and weak wind fields, it doesn’t look like we will have any severe weather issues. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Drier air will move into Alabama Saturday, and it looks like a majority of the day will be dry and mild with a high in the mid 70s. Sunday for now looks like a beautiful day, with ample sunshine and a high in the mid 70s again.

AT THE BEACH: Today will be cloudy, breezy, and cool on the Gulf Coast from Panama City to Gulf Shores with a few passing showers possible; the high will be in the low 60s. Tomorrow and Wednesday will be sunny but cool; lows will be down in the low 40s, with highs only in the 58-62 degree range both days. Then, later in the week, a few showers could show up Thursday, and Friday will feature a good chance of showers and storms. The weekend will be better with a good supply of sunshine; highs this weekend on the immediate coast will be in the 60s, with low to mid 70s inland.

The sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 63 degrees.
