Occasional Showers/Storms

| June 23, 2014 @ 3:37 pm

**No afternoon Weather Xtreme video today; I attended the funeral of my friend Joe Langston, Birmingham TV legend**

RADAR CHECK: The most numerous storms at mid-afternoon were over Northwest Alabama, but there was a strong one just north of downtown Birmingham.

Storms are drifting slowly to the northeast today, and the heavier ones are producing lots of lightning, gusty winds, heavy rain, and some small hail. They could linger well into the night.

REST OF THE WEEK: Tomorrow still looks relatively wet as a weak surface trough/convergence zone passes through; showers and storms are likely with a mostly cloudy sky. Tomorrow’s high will be only in the mid 80s in many places with only a limited amount of sun.

Showers could be a little less numerous Wednesday, but still a deep layer of moisture will be in place for at least scattered showers and storms. We will maintain the risk of scattered showers and storms Thursday and Friday, most likely during the afternoon and evening hours (although we can’t rule out a late night or morning shower somewhere). Highs Wednesday through Friday will be generally in the 87-90 degree range.

THE WEEKEND AHEAD: No reason for now to depart from the classic summer forecast. Partly sunny days; a few scattered showers and storms; highs 87-91. Best chance of getting wet will come during the peak of the daytime heating process, but the storms will be scattered in nature and not everybody will get wet. Same conditions into early next week.

GULF COAST WEATHER: About 5 to 7 hours of sunshine through mid-week with scattered showers and storms from Panama City to Gulf Shores; storms should become fewer in number late this week and over the upcoming weekend. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s; sea water temperatures are mostly in the mid 80s.
