Rain Wednesday Night; Much Colder Friday

| December 14, 2015 @ 2:56 pm

SUNNY AFTERNOON: As advertised, the sky has cleared nicely across Alabama today, and most communities are enjoying blue sky and sunshine this afternoon with temperatures in the pleasant 60s. Tonight will be clear and cool with a low down in the mid 40s.

MID-WEEK: Tomorrow will be another delightful day, with ample sunshine and a high in the mid to upper 60s. Then, on Wednesday, expect increasing clouds by afternoon, and rain should become widespread Wednesday night ahead of the next upper trough to the west. There could be some thunder, but for now severe weather is not expected with hardly any surface based instability. Rain amounts of around 1/2 inch are likely, with potential for up to 1 inch in a few spots, especially south of I-20.

The rain will end Thursday morning; Thursday will be breezy and cooler with a high in the upper 50s.

IT WILL FINALLY FEEL LIKE CHRISTMAS: We drop into the 32-35 degree range early Friday, then Friday will be sunny, but breezy and cool with a high in the mid 50s.

For the weekend, we will drop below freezing both Saturday and Sunday morning. The GFS is printing 31 for Birmingham at daybreak Saturday, and 27 early Sunday. The high Saturday afternoon will be close to 50… many spots north of Birmingham won’t get out of the 40s. Sunday’s high will be in the low to mid 50s. These temperatures are below average for late December in Alabama.

CHRISTMAS WEEK: The “El Nino blow torch” fires up again, and temperatures around here will rise. Expect highs generally in the 60s, and we could touch 70 degrees Christmas afternoon. And, there will be a brisk southerly flow, bringing in a good supply of moist air from the Gulf of Mexico. We will mention the chance of a shower Monday afternoon, and showers and storms will be possible each day Tuesday through Thursday (Christmas Eve). It remains to be seen if there will be a severe weather threat, but we will monitor the potential closely considering the pattern. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: Tomorrow will be a bright, sunny day on the Gulf Coast from Gulf Shores over to Panama City Beach with a high around 70 degrees. Showers and storms are possible Wednesday night and Thursday morning, then dry and cool weather is the story Thursday afternoon through the weekend. See the complete Gulf Coast 7 Day Planner here.
