COOL CHANGE: As Tropical Storm Michael moves away from Alabama today, we will experience an airmass change. The sky becomes mostly sunny, and temperatures will hold in the 70s with a gusty north wind. Dewpoints will steadily drop as drier air works into the state. Tonight will be clear with diminishing wind, and it will be the coolest night so far this season. Most communities across North/Central Alabama will dip into the 45-49 degree range early tomorrow morning… the last time Birmingham had a low in the 40s was on April 30 when we dropped to 42 degrees.

COOL, BREEZY DAY: A cold front passed through in mostly dry fashion across Alabama last night, and today will be considerably cooler than yesterday with a high only in the low to mid 60s with a northwest wind of 12-22 mph. Tonight will be clear, and as the wind dies down colder pockets are headed back for the 30s early tomorrow morning with a bit of light frost possible. Most of the larger cities will see a low closer to 40.

CALMING DOWN: After a night of destructive hail and tornadoes, the weather has calmed across Alabama this morning. NWS survey teams will be out today assessing storm damage; some of the most serious tornado damage is at Jacksonville in Calhoun County, and Southside in Etowah County. Hail damage is extensive in places like Cullman.

ON THE MAP: We have a sharp cold front lined up from near Heflin to Montgomery to Jackson this morning; this will bring a sharp temperature contrast to Alabama today. North of the front, we are seeing low to mid 30s over the Tennessee Valley, but to the south Auburn reports 61 just before daybreak. And, on radar, we see a few patches of light rain in the colder air over the northern quarter of the state.

MUCH COOLER: A cold front is over South Alabama this morning; north of the front temperatures are in the 50s with a north wind. Temperatures will basically rise very little today over the northern half of the state with clouds holding in place. The front becomes stationary, and a wave of low pressure will move along the front tonight, and should bring fairly widespread rain to much of the state.

Rain will exit the state by mid-morning, and the sky becomes partly to mostly sunny by afternoon as cooler, drier air flows into the state. There is a tight surface pressure gradient in place, meaning strong west winds in the 15-30 mph, with gusts to 40 mph in spots. The NWS had a wind advisory in effect for much of Alabama today.
