The watch goes until 5 a.m. in the morning. Multiple supercells should progress east-northeast along a cold front overnight with additional cells potentially developing ahead of the front. A couple of tornadoes and scattered damaging winds will be the main threats.
The storm coming into Sumter County has a history of producing significant tornado damage in eastern Mississippi.
The tornado threat is increasing as expected across western Alabama.
A dangerous tornado is heading toward Meridian MS at this time. It could affect Sumter County, Alabama starting before or around midnight.
Strong storms are affecting West Alabama at this hour. They are not severe but do have gusty winds, heavy rain, and lots of lightning.
The severe weather threat is NOT over for Central Alabama. The threat will be ramping up in the coming hours for areas south of a line from Demopolis to Roanoke overnight.
2-4 inches of rain has fallen across the warning area and flooding is occurring.
The NWS Birmingham has canceled the tornado watch for its counties for now since there is a lull in the severe weather threat. Storms will intensify later tonight with a returning threat for damaging wind, hail and even tornadoes ahead of a cold front.
There are no severe storms in Alabama at this time, but the severe weather threat is not over, and activity is expected to intensify later this evening and overnight.
As of 6:33 pm, there are no severe warnings in effect for anyone in North/Central Alabama… but we do have a line of strong thunderstorms pushing through the northwestern corner of the area that is producing very heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning.
At 609 PM CST, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from Caledonia to near Bent Oak. Movement was east at 40 mph.

A New TORNADO WATCH was just issued for the southeastern parts of Mississippi and a few counties in the southwestern parts of Alabama until midnight tonight. Those Alabama counties include Choctaw, Washington, and Clarke.
