Showers/Storms Remain Daily Occurrence

| May 20, 2018 @ 6:41 am

A humid air mass is expected to remain in place across the Southeast US for the next week. The presence of moisture together with a weakness in the upper air pattern will help to trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms across the area each day.

It was humid this morning with dew points running in the middle and upper 60s. Clouds were scattered across the Alabama sky, however, radar was clear of any showers this morning. As the weakness in the pressure field aloft moves closer to our area, showers and thunderstorms will be a bit more prevalent today, Monday, and Tuesday. Look for our highs to be in the 80s, and it is likely to be just a tad cooler for Monday and Tuesday with the presence of more clouds and showers.

We can follow the weakness as it slowly drifts westward across the Southeast US and the Lower Mississippi River Valley all week, so showers and thunderstorms remain in the forecast each day. The showers and storms will be most prevalent during the afternoon and evening hours, but with this migrating weakness aloft, we really cannot rule out the potential for storms just about any time. Our high temperatures should be in the 80s.

Rainfall is forecast to be in the range of 1 to 3 inches across Alabama with a basic north to south gradient – lower amounts in North Alabama and higher amounts in Southeast Alabama. But because of the nature of thunderstorms, the depicted amounts will not be as uniform as shown. This guidance shows more the maximum amounts that will be possible, so some of us may see very little rainfall.

As we get into next weekend, the GFS is suggesting the beginning to a pattern change as a trough begins to take shape over the eastern US. This could spell a period of much cooler weather for at least a couple of days from May 28th to the 30th as we edge out into voodoo country. If this verifies, it could also mean some much less humid air for us as a front would sweep the high moisture values out into the Atlantic.

Do you remember the tropical mischief we were following on the models over the last several days? If you do, you probably remember that the GFS and the ECMWF were both developing something, but the GFS took it northward into Florida while the ECMWF was more persistent with a northwest track into the Northwest Gulf. On the latest run, the GFS has nothing but some disturbed weather while the ECMWF has a surface low south of New Orleans by next Sunday. I do believe this qualifies as model madness, so we’ll have to wait until the end of next week to see what actually happens.

Looking further into voodoo country, the GFS brings back some heat around the 31st of May with a strong ridge extending from Texas to Lake Michigan. But another trough coming out of Central Canada suggests another break in the heat by the 2nd of June.
