Rain Returns Statewide Thursday

COOL MORNING: Another very refreshing morning across Alabama… some early morning temperatures include:

Today will be another dry, pleasant day with highs in the 70s, but high clouds will be increasing from the west. Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy with a high in the 70s; a shower could reach West Alabama late in the day, but the better chance of rain comes late tomorrow night as weakening Tropical Storm Beta approaches from the west.

THURSDAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND: The weather will be wet at times Thursday and Friday; periods of rain are likely both days as the remnant circulation of Beta moves into Mississippi and dissipates. Thursday will be a cool day with a high only around 70 degrees, then we warm to near 80 Friday as warmer air moves in from the south. There could be a rumble of thunder Friday, but no severe storms are expected; no tornado threat.

Weather for the weekend will be warm, humid, and “showery”. Not a total washout, but occasional showers are likely both days, with a thunderstorm possible as well. The high Saturday and Sunday will be in the low 80s, right at seasonal averages for late September in Alabama. Rain amounts Thursday through Sunday will be in the 1-3 inch range for the northern half of the state.

NEXT WEEK: Most of the week will be dry, but a cold front could bring a few showers Tuesday. Another surge of cool air drops into Alabama for the latter half of the week with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s…. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: UAB has another Thursday night special; they will play the South Alabama Jaguars in Mobile (6:30p CT kickoff). The sky will be cloudy with some rain likely during the game; temperatures will be in the mid to upper 70s. For the high school football games Friday night, you will also need to take the rain gear. Periods of rain are possible with temperatures in the 70s.

Saturday, Auburn hosts Kentucky (11:00a CT kickoff) at Jordan Hare Stadium… the sky will be mostly cloudy with the chance of a few passing showers during the game. Temperatures will rise from near 75 degrees at kickoff, to near 80 by the final whistle.

And, Alabama travels to Columbia to take on Missouri (6:00p CT kickoff). Clouds will increase Saturday night, and a few scattered showers are possible during the game, but nothing too heavy or widespread. Temperatures will fall through the 70s, perhaps reaching the upper 60s by the final whistle.

FALL IS HERE! The autumn equinox is this morning at 8:31a CT. The day the sun is directly over the equator; we have approximately 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Beta is on the Texas coast with winds of 40 mph; it will move northeast in coming days producing heavy rain for places like Houston, Port Arthur, Beaumont, and Lake Charles.

Elsewhere, Hurricane Teddy is headed for Nova Scotia and far eastern Canada; it becomes post-tropical over the next 24 hours. And, out in the far eastern Atlantic, Paulette has come back to life as a tropical storm… it will loop around for a few days before dissipating again. And, a weak disturbance near Key West is not expected to develop.

ON THIS DATE IN 2006: The tri-state area of Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky was struck by the worst tornado outbreak in the recorded history during the month of September. One supercell produced a long-track F4 tornado across southeastern Missouri into southwestern Illinois. This tornado traveled 27.5 miles.
