Midday Nowcast: Unseasonably Cool Despite Sunshine in Full Supply

| March 19, 2024 @ 10:56 am

SUNNY, COOL TUESDAY: Today is a sunny, cool day with a high in the mid 50s across North Alabama with mid 60s across South Alabama. Average high for Birmingham today is 68°, we will be a good 8-10 degrees below that this afternoon. Tonight will be another cold one with lows in the mid to upper 30s, and areas of frost are expected. By the way, Spring officially arrives tonight as the Vernal Equinox occurs 10:06 PM CDT. This is when the sun will be directly over the Equator and both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres are receiving the same amount of sunshine.

USA BRIEF: A cold front followed by a clipper storm will bring periods of snow to the Great Lakes and Northeast U.S. through midweek. Lake-enhanced snow downwind of some of the Great Lakes will bring higher accumulations. Strong, gusty winds and dry air may produce elevated fire weather conditions across the Ohio Valley today and the Mid-Atlantic on Wednesday.

WARMING TREND: Tomorrow will feature a sunny sky with a high in the low 70s in many areas. Clouds will increase Thursday, and a few periods of rain are likely Thursday night into Friday morning as a low pressure tracks along the Gulf Coast. Rain amounts should be in the 1/2 inch to one inch range. Some thunder is possible, no severe storms as the low remains to the south of us. Highs Thursday will be in the 70s, while Friday will feature highs in the low to mid 60s. The sky will clear Friday night as dry air returns to the Deep South.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Look for sunny pleasant days and fair chilly nights. Morning lows will be in the 40s… the high Saturday will be in the upper 60s and low 70s, followed by mid 70s Sunday. The big story for the weekend is both days will finally be dry!!!

NEXT WEEK: Monday will be dry with a high in the low to mid 70s, then rain returns to the state by Tuesday and Wednesday. A few thunderstorms could be involved; still too early to know if they could be strong or severe. Thursday and Friday look dry with highs in the low 70s.
