Midday Nowcast: Sunshine in Full Supply Across Alabama

SUNNY THURSDAY: Tons of sunshine and blue sky across Alabama today, and though it is a beautiful day, it remains chilly with temperatures in the low and mid 50s. Tonight will we will have a few clouds with lows generally in the low 30s. Tomorrow will feature more clouds and temperatures will be a few degrees warmer with mid and upper 50s expected.

BIRMINGHAM ALMANAC: For December 12th, the average high for Birmingham is 58° and the average low is 38°. The record high is 78° set in 1971, while the record low is 4° set in 1962. We average 0.15” of precipitation on this date, and the record value is 2.06” set in 1935.

ACROSS THE USA: Colder air is rushing southward from the Plains into the Southeast. Heavy lake effect snow will occur with up to a few feet of snow and dangerous traveling conditions. Outside of the lake effect, strong winds will make it feel colder and could impact travel for high profile vehicles. The West Coast states will experience a couple of strong Pacific systems. Closely watching Hawaii for wildfires.

WEEKEND WEATHER: Clouds will be increasing Saturday, but the day should be dry. Saturday night and into Sunday a few isolated showers are in the forecast ahead of an approaching weak front. Any rain will be light and spotty with rainfall totals less than half an inch where it falls. Temperatures this weekend will be near seasonal average with upper 50s and lower 60s, while lows will be in the 40s.

NEXT WEEK: Highs will be mostly in the mid 60s for the first half of the week, but then dropping into the 50s for the second half of the week. Nighttime temperatures will be above freezing, and a decent part of the week will be dry, but we will mention some showers by the end of the week. Looking long range, the global models are suggesting another surge of cold air arriving just before Christmas.

CONTIGUOUS TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation was 88F at Atlantis, FL. The lowest observation was -26F at Warroad, MN.
