Midday Nowcast: Early February Feeling Like Late April

| February 3, 2025 @ 10:14 am

NEAR RECORD HIGHS: A very warm week of weather is ahead for Alabama as we are feeling a very early taste of spring as highs will be 15-25 degrees above average. Highs this week will be well into the 70s with some 80s expected across southern sections of the state. The week will be mainly dry as well and the he days will feature a mix of sun and clouds. We note, a few isolated showers are possible over the Tennessee Valley Wednesday through Friday, and a few of these could make it into Central Alabama on Thursday and Friday, but rain amounts, if any, will be light and very spotty.

BIRMINGHAM ALMANAC: For February 3rd, the average high for Birmingham is 56° and the average low is 36°. The record high is 80° set in 1990, while the record low is 7° set in 1951. We average 0.17” of precipitation on this date and the record value is 3.84” set in 1936.

ACROSS THE USA: A prolonged atmospheric river event will continue to bring moderate to heavy rain with a risk for flooding to northern into central California with heavy mountain snow in the Sierras, southern Cascades, and northern Rockies through midweek. High winds may bring power outages and make for difficult travel across northern Nevada and the central Rockies.

THE WEEKEND: Saturday will be dry and warm with highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s. On Sunday, clouds begin to increase and we will bring the chance of rain back to the forecast ahead of a front that will start to bring cooler weather back to Alabama. Again, rain amounts will be relatively light across the state.

BACK TO AVERAGE NEXT WEEK: Highs drop into the 50s and 60s next week and lows fall into the 40s. Still no signs of any bitterly cold air for Alabama the next ten days, but below average temperatures/colder air will begin to return to U.S. in the coming weeks. This week’s weather will have a lot of people catching spring fever, but DON’T, there remains a lot of winter left and we are no where near being done with freezing temperatures in Alabama just yet!

WORLD TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation outside the U.S. was 118.0F at Paraburdoo Aero, Australia. The lowest observation was -68.4F at Delyankir, Russia.

CONTIGUOUS TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation was 90F at Ochopee, FL. The lowest observation was -25F at Browning, MT.
