Midday Nowcast: Rain and Strong Storms at Times

| May 26, 2025 @ 9:55 am

MEMORIAL DAY: We are seeing a mix of sun and clouds today, but we are watching another round of rain and storms to the west of Alabama as they will arrive later today and tonight. Until they arrive, it is a warm and muggy day with temperatures generally in the low to mid 80s. When the storms arrives, as in recent days, they could be strong with gusty winds and small hail. The tornado threat is very, very low, but not zero. A “marginal risk” (level 1 of 5) of severe storms is in place today for Alabama.

BIRMINGHAM ALMANAC: For May 26th, the average high for Birmingham is 84° and the average low is 64°. The record high is 97° set in 1962, while the record low is 41° set in 1979. We average 0.16” of precipitation on this date and the record value is 2.07” set in 1974.

WET AND STORMY AT TIMES: The weather just won’t change much through the week. Partly sunny days with highs in the 80s, and on each day scattered to numerous showers and storms around.

Stronger storms will be capable of producing gusty winds and small hail and the Storm Prediction Center has issued a “marginal risk” (level 1 of 5) of severe storms tomorrow and Wednesday.

We will likely see more risks for Alabama later this week as the pattern is just not changing much. Finally on Friday a cold front will push through the state and drier air will begin to move into the northern counties during the day where the high will drop into the upper 70s.

WEEKEND WEATHER: Good news, for now the weather looks generally rain-free for a change Saturday and Sunday. I cannot remember the last time that was the case for Central Alabama. Humidity levels will be lower; cooler spots over North Alabama should reach the 50s early Saturday morning. Highs will be mostly in the low 80s.

WORLD TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation outside the U.S. was 117.0F at Bilma, Niger. The lowest observation was -87.9F at Dome A, Antarctica.

CONTIGUOUS TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation was 111F at Rio Grande Village, TX. The lowest observation was 25F at Peter Sinks, UT.
