HIGHS HOLD IN THE 80S: Our summer preview continues through the weekend. We are projecting a high today right at record levels again… in the 82 to 85 degree range… with a mix of sun and clouds. And, like recent days, we will continue to mention the risk of scattered showers and storms this afternoon. Some of the storms be pretty strong during the peak of the daytime heating process with some hail and gusty winds, but there is no tornado threat. Another words, just like the storms we see on a summer afternoon.

Over the weekend, the upper ridge will actually get stronger, so any showers tomorrow and Sunday should be very isolated. And, highs stay up in the low to mid 80s with a partly sunny sky both days.

TO THE WEST: A highly amplified upper trough will form over the western third of the nation Sunday; this will bring cold and snowy weather out that way, and also set up what could be a significant severe weather threat for the Southern Plains Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. Sure looks like a storm chasers special along the dry line.

NEXT WEEK: The upper trough will make slow progress eastward each day, but we should stay mostly dry and very warm Monday through Wednesday with highs remaining in the low to mid 80s. We should also note a significant severe weather risk is possible Monday over Texas with the upper system approaching them. Finally, heat levels come down, and rain chances go up here toward the end of next week as the upper system gets close. It will be weaker, and for now the chance of organized severe weather in Alabama looks rather small.

GULF COAST WEATHER: The weather looks great from Panama City to Gulf Shores through Tuesday, with mostly sunny days and fair nights (there will be some fog at times, however). Highs on the immediate coast will be around 70, with mid to upper 70s inland. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this morning was a cool 68 degrees. We do expect to see scattered showers and storms returning to the coast by Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of next week.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
