THIS AFTERNOON: Another summer-like afternoon…. Birmingham is at 80 degrees at 2:00, with most other communities in the 77 to 81 degree range. We will creep up into the low to mid 80s before the day is done. Nothing on the radar around here, and the sky is partly to mostly sunny.

TO THE NORTH: A long severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for parts of Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia, but these storms will remain well to the north of Alabama.

Our weather won’t change much tomorrow; a partly sunny sky with a high in the low 80s. A shower or storm could pop up somewhere on radar during the afternoon, but they should be widely spaced, and most places stay dry.

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: The GFS and the ECMWF (12Z runs) are now showing a better chance of showers and storms here on both days, especially Friday afternoon, Friday night, and into Saturday morning. There hasn’t been much consistency in model output, and we note the NAM is still dry as a bone on these two days. Through the model madness, we will go ahead and increase the chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms Friday afternoon through Saturday; most places should see about 1/2 inch of rain, and the severe weather risk remains rather minimal.

I know with several major outdoor events going on this weekend, many will want exact start and stop times of the rain, but in this summer type regime that is impossible to provide. Just be aware that a shower or storm could come at just about anytime Friday, Friday night, or Saturday. We will make this a little more specific tomorrow and Friday as the weekend gets closer. We figure most communities will wind up with one to two hours of rain.

SUNDAY: Still looks mostly warm and dry. I guess we might mention a small risk of a stray shower, but most communities will be rain-free with a high in the low to mid 80s.

NEXT WEEK: More model madness, but the 12Z GFS brings back the eastern U.S. upper trough next week, which in turn could set the stage for a chance of strong to severe thunderstorms Monday night or Tuesday, followed by much cooler air over the latter half of the week. It is still just too early to be specific, but growers will need to monitor forecasts as next week gets closer. Remember, an early April cold snap is just about a given in the state of Alabama every year. See the Weather Xtreme video for all of the graphics and details.
