Hit And Miss Afternoon Storms

RADAR CHECK: The radar looks what you would expect to see on an August afternoon in Alabama. A random pattern of scattered showers and thunderstorms; they are moving northeast. Some spots getting very heavy rain with lightning, other places dry. Some of the heavier storms at 3:15 were north of Jasper, west of Springville, near Jacksonville, and near Gadsden. Storms will settle down late tonight once we lose the daytime heating. Away from storms, temperatures are in the 80s.

TOMORROW/THURSDAY: I don’t think the weather changes very much. Warm, humid, a mix of sun and clouds, and the risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours. The chance of any one spot getting wet both days remains in the 30-40 percent range, and the high will be in the 85-88 degree range for most communities.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: A strong upper high develops over Kansas, which will represent the center of a hot, dry airmass. A surface front will slowly approach Alabama from the north, and the GFS continues to show drier air pushing into North Alabama Sunday behind the front. We all know shots of dry air aren’t all that common in August around here, but model consistency has been good with the overall idea.

We will mention widely scattered showers and storms Friday and Saturday with a partly sunny sky and a high close to 90 both days. Showers should be hard to find north of Birmingham Sunday afternoon, but from Birmingham south we will maintain some risk of scattered storms.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS sure looks dry for most of Alabama early next week, suggesting mostly sunny weather Monday and Tuesday with few, if any, showers. Highs in the mid to upper 80s… nights a little cooler with lows in the 60s.

GULF COAST WEATHER: About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day through the weekend with the usual risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs in the 80s; sea water temperatures are generally in the mid 80s.
