RADAR CHECK: We have a little light rain still on radar just before daybreak over East Alabama; this light rain and drizzle will end by mid-morning. We also note some very dense fog over parts of Northwest Alabama, and the NWS in Birmingham has issued a Dense Fog Advisory for Fayette, Lamar, Marion, Walker, Winston Counties until 9am. The fog formed where the sky actually cleared last night; the combination of a clear sky, light wind, and wet ground was perfect for dense fog there.

Drier air will filter into the state today, and we expect the morning fog and clouds to give way to afternoon sunshine. If the sun breaks out as expected, today’s high will be at or just over 60 degrees.

TOMORROW: We start the weekend with a dry and mild day tomorrow. Sunshine through high clouds with an afternoon high very close to 70 degrees; both the GFS and the NAM are printing a high of 71 for Birmingham. Should be a fine day.

SHOWERS ON SUNDAY? I know we have been forecasting a totally dry weekend for a few days, but late model data hints that we need to amend the forecast to include a risk of showers as moisture levels rise ahead of a weak surface boundary and short wave. The NAM printing 0.19″ for Birmingham Sunday, while the GFS is drier basically suggesting nothing measurable.

Considering model performance this season, and the overall pattern, we will go ahead and mention the potential for a little light rain at times Sunday with a mostly cloudy sky. It won’t rain all day, and the rain won’t be heavy, but just be aware of the potential for some rain at times. Sunday’s high will be in the 60s.

NEXT WEEK: Monday and Tuesday look dry and very mild with a high in the low to mid 70s. Then, the next short wave/surface front combo will bring a chance of showers by late Tuesday night and Wednesday. Colder air returns later in the week with highs in the 50s Thursday. Looks like the coldest morning will come early Friday when we drop down into the 30s. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

SPRING FORWARD: We go back on Daylight Saving Time this weekend. Set your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed tomorrow night… we lose an hour of sleep, but gain an hour of evening daylight. The sunset Sunday will come at 6:50p CDT.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
