RADAR CHECK: We have scattered showers and thunderstorms in progress across Alabama this afternoon; they are moving to the northwest and producing heavy rain and a good bit of lightning. But, for a decent part of the state the sky is partly to mostly sunny with temperatures mostly in the 87-90 degree range. RADAR CHECK: A disturbance in the upper atmosphere is producing an area of showers over the northern quarter of Alabama early this morning; those showers end a little later in the day. Then, during the heat of the afternoon, we expect more random, scattered showers and storms to form across the state. These should be pretty widely spaced today… otherwise, the sky will be partly sunny with a high in the 88-91 degree range.

ANOTHER PLEASANT MID-SUMMER DAY: We project a high in the mid 80s again today (yesterday’s official high in Birmingham was 86) as a deep upper trough covers the eastern third of the U.S… the average high for Birmingham on July 24 is 91. We will see a mix of sun and clouds, and once again scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop this afternoon and early tonight. Showers will be more numerous over the eastern half of the state, mainly between 2:00 and 10:00 p.m.

This was responsible for severe storms over parts of Alabama over the weekend, including an EF-0 tornado near Opelika Saturday.

ON THE MAPS: A weak surface front is creeping through North Alabama this morning; it represents the leading edge of drier air over Tennessee and Kentucky. The front will stall out around I-20 today, meaning the most numerous showers and storms should be over the southern two-thirds of the state this afternoon. Understand we could see a few showers over North Alabama today as well, but they should be pretty isolated. Otherwise, today will be partly sunny with a high in the low 90s.
