A severe thunderstorm is starting to show signs of rotation as it moves east-northeast at 50 MPH. As of now, the main threat with this cell is damaging winds up to 60 MPH and hail up to 1-inch in diameter.
As of 3:45 pm, we have some stronger storms that are separating themselves from the rest of the activity over northern Mississippi that is about to move into the northwestern parts of the area.
At 3:24 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over northwestern Huntsville, moving northeast at 30 mph. Pea size hail and winds in excess of 40 mph will be possible with this storm.
Scattered supercell development is expected in the next couple of hours from western Tennessee and northeastern Mississippi into northern Alabama and southern middle Tennessee.
QUIET AFTERNOON: The big band of rain and storms that produced some flash flooding issues over the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama this morning has moved north of the state, and most of Alabama is dry this afternoon… we note just a few isolated showers over the northeast counties of the state. Temperatures are in the upper 70s and low 80s, and we await a cold front coming in tonight that will trigger strong to severe thunderstorms.

SPC has increased the risk of severe storms over the far northern parts of North Alabama as the chances for damaging winds, large hail, and a few tornadoes are looking a little more likely.
At 1029 AM CDT, reporting gauges indicate 1 to 3 inches of rain have fallen over an area with saturated soils. There have also been reports of creeks overflowing their banks and ponding on roads and in low-lying areas.
Dr. Mark Wilson, Jefferson County health officer, ordered all nonessential businesses in the county closed by 5 p.m. March 23 in response to COVID-19.

As of 8:10 am, heavier rain and thunderstorms continue to move across the Tennessee Valley region of North Alabama with some locations already receiving nearly 2.00 inches of rain this morning.
At 804 AM CDT, Doppler radar and automated gauges indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Up to one and a quarter inches of rain has already fallen around Huntsville in the past hour,and these storms are moving east-northeast. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
