Alabama NewsCenter: Alabama Power Employees Raise Money to Help People in Need
Employees at Alabama Power raised more than $49,000 in November to support nonprofit agencies and community partners who are helping people in need this holiday season.
Scattered light snow showers have started to cause a few slick spots on roads in some higher elevations of Blount, St. Clair, Etowah, and Cherokee Counties.
Plenty of reports of sleet, snow, and graupel are coming in from across the northern parts of Central Alabama this afternoon, but the good news is that air temperatures are above freezing and the street-surface temperatures are well above freezing at this point.
COLD NOVEMBER DAY: As advertised, this has been a windy and cold late November day across Alabama; temperatures are settling into the 30s over the northern half of the state, and we have snow flurries, snow showers, and patches of light sleet continuing on radar. Temperatures will remain above freezing while the precipitation falls, and there won’t be any impact.
A deep upper trough is swinging across the state today, and it continues to produce clouds and areas of light rain, with even some snow flurries and snow showers at times this afternoon.
WINTER-LIKE DAY: Temperatures will go the wrong way across Alabama today following the system that brought soaking rains and wind to the state yesterday and last night. We are in the 40s at daybreak, but look for 30s by mid to late morning with an icy north wind. As a deep upper trough swings through, it will squeeze out snow flurries and showers in the cold air over the northern half of the state today and early tonight.
Gusty winds up to 35 MPH could blow around unsecured objects or decorations. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.
Rotation is increasing in the cell that is moving toward Elberta in Baldwin County.
But there could be a tornado or two late this afternoon or early this evening in Southwest Alabama and later tonight in Southeast Alabama. For North and Central Alabama, there is no threat of severe weather north of a line from Monroeville to Troy to Eufaula with the best chance over coastal Alabama, Northwest Florida, and extreme Southeast Alabama.
A cold rain is falling across much of Central Alabama this afternoon. That will continue into the evening as a low tracks across the area. Much colder air will follow later tonight and tomorrow.
Light to moderate rain will overspread the state today with a few rumbles of thunder at times. Strong storms will be limited to South Alabama.
