SUMMER PREVIEW: Late April is feeling like early June across Alabama with very warm and muggy days. We are seeing more clouds than sun today with afternoon highs in the low to mid 80s, which are several degree above average for this time of year. As in recent days, the radar is active again today across Alabama with scattered showers and storms. All storms will be producing frequent lightning and very heavy rainfall, which could lead to some localized flash flooding. An isolated severe storm is not out of the question as a storm or two could produce gusty winds and/or marginally severe hail.

BIRMINGHAM ALMANAC: For April 23rd, the average high for Birmingham is 77° and the average low is 54°. The record high is 90° set in 1896, while the record low is 30° set in 1986. We average 0.16” of precipitation on this date and the record value is 1.36” set in 1983.

TOMORROW-THE WEEKEND: Showers and storms become fewer in number and more isolated in nature, most of these will occur during the afternoon and evening hours, peak heating of the day. The chance of any spot seeing rain will be in the 20-30% range. Despite the lower rain chances, the air mass will not change, as the days will feature a mix of sun and clouds, with highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s.

RACE WEEKEND: The weather will be warm and mostly dry at Talladega through Sunday. The chance of an afternoon shower/storm is small (20 percent or less), with highs in the 80s. Great weather for all the race weekend actives. Make sure you are staying hydrated if you are enjoying the races.

NEXT WEEK: Little change in the forecast with isolated showers and storms remaining a possibility; highs will remain in the 80s. The models agree a front is likely at some point over the second half of the week, but there is no agreement in the timing, and we will just have to watch trends in the coming days before we have better clarity. The front does look to bring a late season cool snap for the first weekend of May.

WORLD TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation outside the U.S. was 113.9F at Tillaberry, Niger. The lowest observation was -94.5F at Concordia, Antarctica.

CONTIGUOUS TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation was 103F at Rio Grande Village, TX. The lowest observation was 15F at Burgess Junction, WY
