MICHAEL NOW A CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE: Overnight Michael strengthened into a dangerous, life threatening category four hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico with sustained winds of 140 mph. Landfall comes around midday today near Panama City Beach.
THIS AFTERNOON: As expected, we have high clouds over Alabama this afternoon along with a few widely scattered showers. Nothing widespread; temperatures are mostly in the low to mid 80s. We will maintain the chance of a few showers tonight.
EYES ON MICHAEL: Alabama’s weather won’t change much today; high clouds will increase ahead of Hurricane Michael in the Gulf of Mexico, and a few scattered showers will develop today and tonight, but nothing especially widespread. We reach the low to mid 80s this afternoon; the average high for October 9 at Birmingham is 77.
THE LATEST ON MICHAEL: Michael is a category one hurricane near the Yucatan Channel this afternoon; it is expected to strengthen over the next 24 hours, becoming a major, category three hurricane by tomorrow night in the Gulf of Mexico.
EYES ON THE GULF: Michael should become a hurricane today as it moves into the southern Gulf of Mexico; here in Alabama today will be warm again with a high in the 80s.. the sky will be partly to mostly sunny with only isolated showers this afternoon.
