RADAR CHECK: Scattered showers and storms continue to develop across Alabama on the summer afternoon… they are most numerous over the western and southern counties. Away from the showers temperatures are in the 88-92 degree range, not too far from average values for mid-July. Showers will fade this evening, and tonight will be mostly fair with a low in the 70s.
RADAR CHECK: Showers and storms are confined to the southwest counties of Alabama this afternoon… otherwise the sky is partly to mostly sunny with temperatures near 90 degrees at mid-afternoon. Storms over South Alabama will fade this evening, and tonight will feature a mostly fair sky with a low in the low 70s for most places.
RADAR CHECK: A batch of thunderstorms is moving southward through East Alabama this afternoon, with potential for hail and strong winds… a number of severe thunderstorm warnings have been needed. The rest of the state is hot and dry with temperatures generally in the mid to upper 90s. Heat index values are in the 100-110 degree range.
HOT: Temperatures will remain about 7-10 degrees above average across Alabama today… most places will experience a high in the 96-100 degree range this afternoon with hazy sun. Because of the high humidity, the heat index will top out between 104 and 110 this afternoon, and much of the state is under either an “excessive heat warning” or a “heat advisory”.
RADAR CHECK: An MCS (Mesoscale Convective System) is moving into extreme North Alabama as I write this discussion at 3p CT, and a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the Tennessee Valley until 7p CT. The main threat will come from strong winds, and there is a chance the upper ridge will win the battle and the storms will fizzle out quickly as they move southward below the Tennessee River.
BLOW TORCH HEAT: Summer heat will be the big weather story for Alabama and the Deep South through the weekend… easily the hottest weather so far this year. Expect a high in the 95-100 degree range today and tomorrow, followed by mid 90s over the weekend. Factor in the high humidity, and the heat index will peak at 105-110 over the western 2/3 of the state through tomorrow, where an “excessive heat warning” is in effect.
HAZY SUMMER SUN: Temperatures are mostly in the low 90s across Alabama this afternoon with a good supply of hazy sunshine. Mobile is the hot spot with 96 degrees at 2p CT; the heat index there is 104. Tonight will be mostly fair with a low in the 68-74 degree range.
SIZZLING SUMMER WEATHER: Heat levels will continue to rise across Alabama and the Deep South through the rest of the week with mostly sunny days and fair nights. Temperatures reach the mid 90s today, upper 90s tomorrow, and the 97-101 degree range Friday afternoon. With high humidity values, the heat index will rise into the 105-110 degree range tomorrow and Friday, and excessive heat warnings will be needed for a decent part of Alabama.
TYPICAL SUMMER DAY: Temperatures are generally in the low to mid 90s across Alabama this afternoon… the sky is mostly sunny over much of the state, but we note a few scattered thunderstorms over the southwest counties. Those storms will fade quickly after sunset, and tonight will be mostly fair with a low in the 67-73 degree range.
HOT: The hottest weather so far this year is just around the corner for Alabama and much of the Deep South. We are forecasting highs in the mid 90s today and tomorrow, upper 90s Thursday, and very close to 100 degrees Friday. Humidity levels will creep up as well, and by Thursday and Friday the heat index could rise to near 110 degrees over the western half of the state.
QUIET AFTERNOON: All 67 Alabama counties are rain-free this afternoon under a mostly sunny sky. Temperatures are mostly in the low 90s, not too far from average values for late June. A few scattered storms could still fire this evening, mainly over the southeast corner of the state, where SPC maintains a low end “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms.
RADAR CHECK: Showers and storms are moving out of extreme South Alabama this morning… the rest of the state is rain-free. Expect a partly sunny sky today with only a small risk of a shower or storm for any one given spot this afternoon.
HOT JUNE DAY: Look for a high in the 88-93 degree range across Alabama today with a partly to mostly sunny sky. It will be a hazy day for the northern third of the state, where some smoke in the upper atmosphere from the Canadian wildfires will persist. A few isolated storms will fire up this afternoon, generally in the window from 2:00 until 9:00 p.m.
RADAR CHECK: As expected, we have random, scattered showers and storms on radar this afternoon mainly over the western half of the state. Storms that have formed are moving slowly to the west/southwest, and the heavier ones are capable of producing small hail and gusty winds. Elsewhere, the sky is partly to mostly sunny with temperatures in the 86-90 degree range.
