At this point, the heaviest rainfall is occurring along the Alabama/Mississippi state line, especially in parts of Marion and Lamar counties. There is also a band of showers and storms that is producing a good bit of lightning on the eastern side of the area, mainly from Talladega to just north of Phenix City.
Huntsville is always growing, and that includes its food scene, which offers a variety of must-try restaurants.
At 344 PM CDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Davisville, or 7 miles southeast of Tuskegee, moving north at 20 mph.
Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts. Additional weakening is forecast during the next day or so.
The risk for a few tropical-induced tornadoes remain across the west and southwestern parts of Central Alabama as we are moving into the late afternoon hours. The Storm Prediction Center has outlined an area that is where the potential is highest for those tornadoes.
At 253 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. This will cause urban and small stream flooding. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen.
BIG PICTURE: Tropical Storm Ida continues to weaken this afternoon; the center of circulation is about 20 miles west of Jackson, Mississippi, and sustained winds are down to 40 mph. There is a large rain shield east of Ida across the eastern half of Mississippi and the western 2/3 of Alabama this afternoon.
At 216 PM CDT, a confirmed tornado was located near Banks, or near Troy, moving north at 30 mph.
At 206 PM CDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Antioch, or near Troy, moving north at 30 mph.
An Auburn University multidisciplinary project focused on the infamous “Bloody Sunday” civil rights event in Selma on March 7, 1965, is the recipient of an award as part of $28.4 million in humanities grants recently announced by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).
At 139 PM CDT, a tornado producing storm was located 6 miles southwest of Whatley, or 8 miles south of Grove Hill, moving north at 45 mph.
At 105 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near Blanche, or near Little River Canyon National Preserve, moving northeast at 20 mph.
At 1256 PM CDT, a confirmed tornado was located 8 miles east of Calvert, or 19 miles north of Bay Minette, moving northeast at 45 mph. A debris signature is still being indicated.
On the forecast track, the center of Ida will move farther inland over western and central Mississippi this afternoon. Ida is then forecast to move over northeastern Mississippi tonight, and move across the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday and near the central Appalachians on Wednesday.
