The Storm Prediction Center has issued a mesoscale discussion highlighting the potential for localized damaging winds this afternoon across parts of central and eastern Kentucky, middle and eastern Tennessee, northern Alabama, and extreme northwest Georgia.
Big HEAT, Big STORMS, and yet again today, due to the high instability values across the state, the Storm Prediction Center has much of Alabama in a severe weather risk both today.
If you’re not from Alabama’s Wiregrass region, there is a good chance you’ve never heard of the town of Samson in Geneva County. It’s not on an interstate or even a main road to the beaches.
MUGGY SUMMER DAYS: We have some pretty classic summer weather for Alabama and the Deep South through the weekend. Partly sunny days, highs in the 88-92 degree range, and the usual risk of “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”.
RADAR CHECK: Showers are almost impossible to find across Alabama this afternoon; the rain overnight last night and early this morning helped to stabilize the atmosphere. Heat levels are also down; many communities are only in the mid to upper 80s with a partly to mostly sunny sky.

Heat Advisories continue today for portions of Alabama as heat index values surge above 105°. Along with the heat, we have to deal with the threat of strong to severe storms due to the high instability values across the state.
RADAR CHECK: A disturbance moving westward on the south side of the upper high to the north of Alabama brought widespread rain and storms to the state overnight. Rain is still falling over much of North Alabama at daybreak; some southeast counties are still seeing some rain as well.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch extended until 3 AM for 8 Central Alabama counties, including Selma, Clanton, Wetumpka, and Demopolis. Damaging winds and hail remain possible.
A line of severe storms is moving into Dallas, Lowndes, and Montgomery counties with 60 mph wind gusts, but weakening is expected soon.
Severe thunderstorms with 60 mph winds are sweeping across Pike and Bullock counties this evening. Warning continues until 10 PM.
A severe thunderstorm over Centreville is producing 60 mph wind gusts and small hail. Warning is in effect until 9:45 PM.
A dangerous storm over Bridgeport is producing ping pong ball size hail and 60 mph wind gusts—warning continues until 5:45 PM.
